Mitsubishi’s Turbocharged Engines: The Return

Mitsubishi’s Turbocharged Engines

Turbochargers were all the rage in the 1980s and 90s, and Mitsubishi was one of the lead automakers for Japanese sports cars. In this greener era, turbocharged engines are more watered down and not nearly as performance-oriented as they used to be. With the Mitsubishi Evo leaving the market, it seemed like Mitsubishi’s turbocharged engines would be getting the axe as well.

Fortunately for performance enthusiasts, that’s not the plan at all. In early April, Mitsubishi announced that a new series of turbocharged engines were on the way. It looks like the new engine line won’t be limited to performance-ready cars either.

The first turbocharged engine to hit the United States will be a 1.5-liter that will debut in a mid-size crossover. Hitting the market in 2018, the new crossover will fit between the Outlander and Outlander Sport.

Mitsubishi is also considering a 1.1-liter turbocharged engine for the Mirage and Mirage G4 cars. Not only that, there are talks of a larger turbocharged engine for the next-gen Outlander crossover.

All three of those engines are expected to hit United States roadways by 2019 and they certainly can’t come soon enough.

Here at Heritage Mitsubishi, we can’t wait for turbocharged engines to play a larger role in the lineup!
