It was a sad day when Mitsubishi announced it would be discontinuing the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, but all good things must come to an end, or so they say. To pay it the homage it most certainly deserves, we at Heritage Mitsubishi want to offer a brief look back.
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, or EVO, got its start in 1992, when Mitsubishi developed the car to compete in the World Rally Championship. Lucky for driving enthusiasts, Mitsubishi also released a stripped down, street-legal version. A year later came the EVO II and then the EVO III in 1995; each iteration brought forth even more compelling performance feats, such as the revised turbocharger for the EVO III.
According to The News Wheel, it was the EVO IV that truly left its mark when it debuted with a twin-turbocharger, Active Yaw Control, the famed fog lights, and a limited-slip front differential. The EVO V came in 1998, offering a more aggressive stance and the torque to back it up. A few years later marked the arrival of the EVO VII and then, in 2003, the EVO VIII. It was the EVO IX in 2006 that many fell in love with, however, as it offered several driving modes, an updated transmission, and variable valve lifting. The EVO X was the final version, appearing in 2008 here in the States.
